Speech Perception in Deaf Children with Cochlear Implants1

چکیده
Cochlear implants work well in many profoundly deaf adults and children. However, despite the success of cochlear implants in many deaf children, large individual differences have been reported on a wide range of speech and language outcome measures. This finding is observed in all research centers around the world. Some children do extremely well with their cochlear implant while others derive only minimal benefits after receiving their implant. Understanding the reasons for the variability in outcomes and the large individual differences following cochlear implantation is one of the most important problems in the field today. This chapter summarizes recent findings on the speech perception skills of deaf children following cochlear implantation. The results of these studies suggest that in addition to several demographic and medical variables, variation in children’s success with cochlear implants reflects fundamental differences in rapid phonological coding and verbal rehearsal processes which are used in a wide range of clinical outcome measures used to measure benefit following implantation.

Background & Aim: When inner ear is disturbed, both hearing sensitivity and selective property decrease. Early rehabilitation for proper progression of speech and language appropriate to age is mandatory. Several studies were performed to compare factors that affect the results of cochlear implantations to select the best candidates on the basis of different criteria. This study was underta...
متن کاملExpressive Language Development in 45 Cochlear Implanted Children Following 2 Years of Implantation
Objectives: Profound hearing loss encounters children with delay in speech and language. As it is known language acquisition in young deaf children is a lengthy process, but cochlear implanted children have better spoken language skills than if they had not received the device. According to the importance of cochlear implant in deaf childchr('39')s language development, this study evaluates the...
متن کاملCorrelation between Auditory Spectral Resolution and Speech Perception in Children with Cochlear Implants
Background: Variability in speech performance is a major concern for children with cochlear implants (CIs). Spectral resolution is an important acoustic component in speech perception. Considerable variability and limitations of spectral resolution in children with CIs may lead to individual differences in speech performance. The aim of this study was to assess the correlation between auditory ...
متن کاملSpeech development and auditory performance in children after cochlear implantation
Abstract Background: The aim of this study was to determine the auditory performance of congenitally deaf children and the effect of cochlear implantation (CI) on speech intelligibility. Methods: Aprospective study was undertaken on 47 children in a pediatric tertiary referral center for CI. All children were deaf prelingually and were younger than 8 years of age. They were followed up until 5...
متن کاملNonword Repetition and Reading in Deaf Children with Cochlear Implants1
In the present study, we report analyses of nonword repetition responses from 76 experienced pediatric cochlear implant (CI) users. Immediate repetition of a spoken nonword stimulus requires a child to correctly perceive a novel sound pattern, maintain a representation and rehearse it in phonological working memory, and then reproduce a phonological pattern as an output response. Nonword repeti...
